Our very own Harvey Gilbert has alerted us to a need for help in Nepal. Checks should be made out to the Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club or cash can be given directly to Harvey (who regularly attends the Livingston Sunrise meeting as well as being a founding member of the club).

Greetings from Nepal!

I paid a visit to an area that was hard hit by the April may earthquakes. This area called Jeetpurfedi lies North of Kathmandu and was almost totally devastated by the tremors. Rotary Club of Dillibazar provided immediate relief after the quakes and these comprised of foodstuffs to the most needy/disadvantaged groups. We also coordinated with the village elders to provide Corrugated Galvanised Iron (CGI) sheets for roofing to 41 houses. We ensured that the recipients also contributed (mostly through labor) in the reconstruction process.
During the visit, we saw some reconstruction taking place. Some donors had contributed in constructing classrooms for the school and were made of CGI sheets. These would save the children from the changing weather (wind, sun and rain). The need is large and our Government is struggling to provide help where it is most needed. In the case of Jeetpurfedi, there is a need to help the school that has around 350 children in different grades. Permanent classrooms, playground, community hall etc are some of the requirements. This is in a peri-urban setting (place that is rural but has characteristics of the urban areas). Rotary Club of Dillibazar has been working around education (even before the earthquakes) hence our focus naturally are in that area. We have also provided help to a school that provided education to the deaf and dumb children in Kathmandu. Some assistance here is also needed. Please understand that we are looking at schools that we are familiar with. Please discuss at your Club.
